Le Gouvernail: A Unique Viewpoint Over the Strait of Bonifacio

Nestled at the tip of the peninsula, just beyond the Marine Cemetery, Le Gouvernail offers a truly unique and spectacular experience. This former military site, carved into the limestone cliffs, is reached by descending an impressive tunnel of 168 steps.

At the end of the tunnel, an underground observation chamber, perched around 10 metres above the sea, reveals breathtaking panoramic views of the cliffs, the Strait of Bonifacio, and the island of Sardinia.

Below, you'll spot a rock whose shape resembles a ship's rudder. Nicknamed "Le Gouvernail" ("The Rudder") by Bonifacio's fishermen, it gave this remarkable military site its name. Rising from the waves, it seems to guide your gaze towards the open sea… and for a moment, you may even feel as though you're standing at the helm of a ship.

Built in 1880 by the French Military Engineering Corps, this strategic outpost was designed to monitor the entrance to Bonifacio harbour and control the strait. It was equipped with a powerful searchlight that, after dark, swept across the waters as far as the Sardinian coast.

Today, this historic site offers a unique experience suspended between sea, sky and history, providing fascinating insight into the ingenuity of Bonifacio's defensive system.
