The Bastion de l'Étendard

Dive into Bonifacio’s military history at this iconic monument located in the heart of the citadel. Explore its underground galleries, exhibitions and breathtaking panoramic viewpoints.

The Escalier du Roy d'Aragon

Clinging to the cliffside, this legendary staircase of 189 hand-carved steps leads you down to the sea. A spectacular descent between myth and reality, offering a dizzying perspective over the Strait of Bonifacio.

A word of advice: leave your flip-flops at home! Flat, closed-toe shoes are required. Our visitor services team will be happy to provide you with a helmet at the beginning of your visit.
A good level of fitness is recommended, as you will need to descend these uneven steps to the sea and then climb back up. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and children under 3 years old must be carried in a baby carrier.
For safety reasons, dogs are not allowed to visit this monument.

Le Gouvernail

Located at the southern tip of the peninsula, this military outpost carved into the rock in 1880 offers fascinating insight into Bonifacio’s defensive system. After descending a tunnel of 168 steps, you will reach an underground chamber with breathtaking views over the sea, the cliffs and Sardinia. A timeless experience suspended between sky, sea and history, in the unique atmosphere of a hidden viewpoint.
